Inpatient Drug
Rehab
Inpatient drug rehab is one of many methods whose
ultimate goal is long-term abstinence from drugs and alcohol. Those who attend
an inpatient drug rehab use the new tools they have learned to help them
re-enter society and lead responsible, successful drug and alcohol free
lives.
Inpatient drug rehab centers offer support and structure for men
and women seeking help for problems with drugs or alcohol. Participants reside
on location for the course of the rehab program; lengths of stay vary and may
be individualized. Care at an inpatient drug rehab is provided 24 hours a day 7
days a week; this is only one of the benefits of attending an inpatient drug
rehab.
The place of inpatient treatment as a mainstay intervention for
addressing alcohol and other drug problems has been the subject of much debate.
Residential programs are indicated for individuals requiring high levels of
structure and support to displace deeply ingrained drug use behavior that are
under strong environmental control.
Many of these longer-term
residential programs are structured around the need to develop a disciplined
work ethic and use peer support processes (e.g. Alcoholics Anonymous and
Narcotics Anonymous) as a means of attaining and maintaining recovery.
Therapeutic communities are structured to facilitate change in an individual's
approach to life and to alter attitudes towards drinking and drug taking.
Principles underlying their approach have been defined as (1) mutual self-help
and an emphasis on work as education and therapy, and (2) peers as role models
and staff as rational authorities. Daily routine is also emphasized as an
important component of treatment and care.
Typically, programs that
seek to impart knowledge and skills in an intensive and focused
didactic/experiential format tend to be of a shorter duration than those that
seek to lay the foundation for sobriety by longer-term participation in the
general day to day functioning of the program. Many inpatient drug rehabs
incorporate abstinence based 12-Step programs such as Alcoholics Anonymous
(AA).
